Let Me Get the Camera First!

I was in the kitchen making dinner recently. The kids were in the living room watching The Backyardigans. (These two rooms join, for those of you who have never been to our house.) I'm minding my own business when I finally realize that Jonathan is repeating the same word over and over again. He's still in the living room, but I can hear him plainly saying over and over, "Tuck...tuck...tuck." He's not crying. He's not yelling. He's simply calmly repeating this word to himself. My curiosity gets the better of me, and I go to see what he's talking about because I'm not sure what "tuck" means.

When I see him, I know instantly what "tuck" means. He looks up at me for assistance, and I tell him I will help him, but I just need to take his picture first, and I go get the camera.

He was "stuck." That's what he was saying over and over. It would have been my guess, since I knew they weren't watching The Wonder Pets (one of the characters is named Tuck). But I couldn't imagine that he actually WAS stuck because he seemed so unconcerned about it. When he's stuck, he usually yells it, "Tuck! Tuck! Tuuuuuck!" Also, one of his siblings would have normally come running into the kitchen to jabber something at me that might have contained the recognizable words "Jonathan" (Jaw-hen) and "stuck" (tuck). From this I might have pieced together the fact that Jonathan was stuck somewhere. But they weren't paying him any attention, which proves the lack of concern Jonathan had in his state of immobility.

I guessed he wasn't in pain, and he just figured if he said it enough, someone would happen along to help him out. I don't know, but it was funny!

I am not even sure how I came across your blog but I love it...I think maybe somehow from the Steece blog which I love too. I am a lurker and HAD to come out ofter this post. I just read your "tuck" post and I died laughing!! That is hilarious!! Last night my little one got stuck somehow between the handle of his wagon. Actually he sat his hiney down in that space and could not get out. He doesn't know "tuck" yet but the looks I got said it all. I can imagine he was thinking something along the lines of "Hello Mommy, aren't you paying attention to me enough to know I need help over here!!" I will take a cue from you and get the camera for real next time. I did happen to snap one with my phone for laughs when my husband got home!! So thanks to you for making me laugh at work and knowing there is another mom out there that gets a kick out of a kid that is "tuck"!!

Have a great day!!

I am sooo glad I'm not the only one who will go grab a camera first! I figure no blood, no serious injury, then it is a camera moment!

We have alot of "tuck" moments here too!

that is super cute that he didn't seem concerned about it....just casually mentioned that he was stuck. HA! I know that I would take that as: you and Jim are great parents (he knows you will take care of him, even though kids may only do this a handful of times, but take it as God's sign! :) ) AND he IS a more laid-back sorta kid-ever since he was born!

That is so cute! Philip and I talk about how Ethan needs whiskers or something because he often squeezes into places that he can not get out of.

I did the same thing many times - two in particular involved my middle one. Once he called out from the back yard where he had climbed and perched on the top of the swingset. Of course I said "Stay there while I get the camera". I normally have a "you got in to it, you get out of it" policy, but there are times where you just get 'tuck'. The second was when he went head first into a very tall box that held a gym mat. All I saw were two feet frantically kicking at the top of the screaming box. No time for a camera on that one - he was pretty spooked. All part of groing up - both as a kid and as a mom!

I too am a lurker! One of my children, who is now seven, is always getting stuck. Instead of yelling for help when he cannot get himself out he yells for me to get the camera. I guess he got tired of waiting in the peculiar positions he gets himself into. I enjoy the stories about your beautiful kids.
